Expiration Date?
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:02:49 PM »
Mountain bike action did an article on how long your frames and components are good for.this is a shorten article. The one in the Mag is much longer and more detail but generally over all , environment you ride in,how hard you ride, how often, riding style, your build( you), how often you pull maintenance, and how much and bad the crashes are. The average mt biker( mt bike action reader) spends around 10 hours of riding a week( based on the 2010 reader survey). so here we go

Frame: steel-7 yrs,Alum-4 yrs, carbon-3yrs
bars: alum-1.5 yrs, carbon-1yr
grips: as long as they feel good
Stem: 1yr
headset: 1yr, oversize 2 yrs
brake cable: six months
fork: 2 yrs
wheels: 2yrs
tires: six months
rotors: 1.5 yrs
brakes: replace as soon as pads wear past the Manufacturers limit
rear shock: 1 yr
pivot bearings: 1yr
Frt derailleur: 2yrs
cranks: 2 yrs
pedals: 2 yrs
chain: 4 months
saddle: 4 yrs
seatpost: Alum-2yrs, carbon-1yr, and adjustable height-90-days
rear derailluer: six months
derailluer cable: six months

sounds like a marketing scam to me.

Might not be too far off in some respects. For me a DH frame is going to last for a long, long time. This is based on 10 hours a week of riding. I ride DH on average 1 weekend a month for 5 months. If you figure 10  hours of riding a weekend for 50 total hours a year my frame will last for a lot longer than I will ever want to keep it.

You don't ink there might be some bias in there to get people to buy all the new stuff they're advertising on the previous and following pages?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Ask RC is the reason I stopped reading MBA.  I always found it strange that he recommended bikes that had the largest ads in the magazine, and shat upon anything that was not spandex related.

For real, I'll pick that guys dumpster too.  The funniest thing on that list is handlebars (IMHO).  I'm not saying I'm the most hardcore guy out there, but I have never broken one (or even seen one broken).  What a douche.

I can honestly say that I have seen one handlebar snap in half at the stem. It was an Azonic HB, The guy weighs probably over 300 lbs and it was the the 25mm size HB. The guy over shot the jump and was very nose heavy when he landed. I think it was on lower part of ball and jack at SS.  Guy rides a blue Cove shocker I think.

When I look back at things that I have broken, some are close to being in line with the dates, and others are nowhere near it.

Aluminum Frame Hardtail -3 frames broken and all in under a year. Have about 5 years total on steel jump bikes with no breakage.
Aluminum Frame Suspension - 1 rear triangle broken in 2.5 years riding. Chumba has 4 years, and is clapped the f out. One broken rear linkage.  Bottlerocket, 2 years and still going.
Aluminum bars - broke in 2 years, but the impact would have probably have broken a brand new set.  Normally replace after a season if I ride a lot.
Wheels - Normally break on a mistake, I don't think that time has much to do with this one. 48 spoke halo combats have 4 years on them on the jump bike.
Headset - wore out one, 3 years. Have put 3 years without issue on a fsa pig though.
Cranks - 2 years for aluminum, profiles and deity have lasted over 3 a piece and still going.
Brakes, cables, etc.  replace when worn.  Time does not matter.
Stems... Never

Mind you this is coming from a 6'1" 245 pound guy that rides like a hack.

I generally threw away my chains and all cables/ housings after each race this season.  I also moved the front tire and pads to rear after every other race.  With GES races being so far away I would consider that relatively cheap mechanical insurance.

No clue how someone only gets 4 months of xc use out of a RD...
